Jashari about transfer posse: “A change could have been good for me”

Blick: Ardon Jashari, were you happy on Thursday that you played for Lucerne and not for Basel?
Ardon Jashari: “I’m happy to be on the field. And I am proud that I can play football in Lucerne, where I grew up, and that I can play almost every match here.”

In July you wanted to move to FCB. What attracted you to the Basel project?
«I felt a huge appreciation for the way they had planned the next few years for me. I would have played the same role at Basel as I did at Lucerne, you don’t get that at many clubs. At FCB everything is a bit bigger, a change could have been good for my development process, especially because I still live with my parents.”

You publicly announced your desire to change in an unauthorized interview with the “Luzerner Zeitung”. Did you want to put pressure on the FCL?
«At that moment the interview felt good to me. I didn’t expect how it was spoken and written about afterwards. The statements were clear to me, but obviously not to many readers.”

What were the reactions?
“There were no big reactions in my personal environment. I then had very open conversations with my superiors Remo Meyer (sports director) and Mario Frick (coach). Of course there were one or two fans who didn’t like it, but I understand that.”

What did you learn from it?
«I would give the interview more understandably and at a different time – after a transfer. So that the reader may not misunderstand my statements.”

Would FCB be better off with you?
“I am convinced of my qualities. I think I can help any team. It is difficult to assess how FCB would fare for me, because football is a team sport.

There were always rumors about interested parties. Did you feel pressured to change?
“No. I haven’t been a professional for two years. Everything happened extremely quickly. I became a regular player, captain, made my first appearances in the national team and was at the World Cup. It was clear to outsiders that I would change. But For me, long-term career planning is important. I am not moving abroad so that I can be back in Switzerland when I am 25. A role model for me is Granit’s careers

How is your relationship with Granit Xhaka?
«We often talk to each other, and I also share my situation and my feelings with him. He always gives me tips. He is ten years older than me, plays in my position and has a similar personality.”

What things do you copy from him?
“He has a lot of experience and a huge presence, which I also try to bring to the pitch at FCL, even though Arsenal and Leverkusen are of course something completely different. But I hope that with the years and more experience I can take on this role.”

You earn considerably less in Lucerne than you would have earned in Basel. How painful is that?
“If I stay healthy, follow my path and develop further, I will certainly be able to earn more money. The most important thing is that I can play and get my minutes. If it was just about the money, I would have moved abroad, but I wouldn’t have been 100 percent convinced. But I didn’t do that, which shows that I don’t base my career on money.”

When you extended your contract until 2026 a year ago, Remo Meyer admitted that the club would not put any obstacles in the way of a change. Did you blame him for that?
‘We had a good exchange. I told him my opinion, he gave me his. Over time I also understood the club’s position. It makes me proud that the club where I grew up fought for me and showed me how important I am to them. They didn’t want to just let me go to a club that was competitive.”

Were there no accusations against you?
“No accusations, they just took away my captaincy (laughs). But Mario and Remo were players themselves, they know the situation.”

How much does it hurt that you had to give up the toad?
“That’s no problem for me. I know what I am – with or without bandages. My character, my mentality, my will remained the same, and the club felt that too. The most important thing is that the performance is good.”

But as captain you have a different impact on the team.
“I was captain for a year and a half, the team knows my character. My word has weight and I know I will be taken seriously.”

Many clubs were traded. Which offer was the most concrete?
“There were some offers from the Bundesliga, also from the Premier League, Serie A and from top clubs in Belgium. But in terms of the total package, no club was an option and that’s why I didn’t move abroad.”

What didn’t fit?
«The most important point is when a club gives me the feeling that they are making plans with me so that I can develop further. It is crucial for every player to play. If not, then you’re not happy. Healthy competition is a good thing, but when I see that a club has six or seven other players in my position, that is not the case for me.

The FCL has started the season very well? What is possible?
“The ambitions are great. But we have to keep our feet on the ground and take it one game at a time. We’ll see where we are in the winter.”

Are there any big announcements?
«I’m a winning type and I hate losing. But you have to be realistic and not forget where we were two years ago. We are not YB, who won the double last season. We have shown in the big matches that we are on equal footing, which gives us confidence.”

What is your relationship like with Mario Frick, who occasionally criticizes you harshly?
“We have a very good relationship and are very honest with each other. He asks a lot of me and knows that I am very ambitious and also demand a lot of myself.”

Does he irritate you occasionally?
“No, he raised me and discovered my talent. I will always be grateful to him for that. I am happy with his honest opinion. But I can also tell him my opinion. This exchange is very important.”

You also owe a lot to Bernhard Alpstaeg. How is your relationship with him?
“He supported me when I was younger, but I’m not in touch with him at the moment.”

How do you deal with the dispute over the stadium?
‘I do not care. We had all the theater with me (laughs). I focus on the sport so that we can be successful as a team.”

There was also controversy in the national team. How did you experience this?
“It is important for me in the national team that I can bring as much as possible with me – on and off the field, both football-wise and personally.”

How intensive is the training in the national team?
“It is certainly different than at the club. But you’re only together for a short time.”

In October you will play in Israel, where a lot is happening in the sporting field.
“We approach every national team match to win. We assume that we are the best team in the group. It’s a shame that we got the equalizer against Romania and Kosovo shortly before the end. But there are no doubts, we just have to deliver.”

The move was not successful in the summer, are you now aiming for a transfer in the winter?
“I don’t think about it much, what’s important to me is that I perform as best as I can, get my minutes and stay healthy. I want to score points, make the fans happy and show what I can do.”

Mohamed Dräger said he would never move to YB. What does that look like for you?
‘I’ve never thought about that. But I can’t imagine a switch to YB at the moment. Next year I will be 22. And at some point my goal is to move abroad.”
