The transfer joke surrounding Ardon Jashari (21) has stirred emotions this summer. Basel really wanted him. However, Lucerne did not give up its jewel because of a fundamental decision. FCB boss David Degen (40) then gives an interview to the “Basler Zeitung”. In it he competes against FCL sports director Remo Meyer (42) and wants to explain his work to him.

“I advised him that he should not act rashly in his position and without consulting his board of directors.” Degen explains that he made Jashari an FCL record transfer. «You can’t just stop everything after a very short time! You need to go to the board of directors and tell them about it – and give them your opinion about it. Something like this needs to be decided at the highest level.”

“Awkward and unhappy”

Meijer has not yet commented on this. He made up for that in an interview with Blick just before the first game of the season against Bebbi. “In my opinion it was a difficult interview. Degen’s words reveal a certain arrogance.” Lucerne’s sporting director reminds us that he was not the only FCL representative at the table in the only discussion about Jashari with the FCB. “Stefan Wolf was also present at this conversation – the highest-ranking member of the board of directors,” Meyer emphasizes.

Meyer does not want to say anything further about it. “Everyone is allowed to have a different opinion and everyone does their job as they see fit. We go our own way.” And this proves that the Central Swiss team is right in the still young season – unlike FCB, which is still finding its feet. Especially since Jashari has once again shown how important he is to the team after turbulent weeks and handing over the captain’s armband.

FCL is happy with Jashari again

«We had an intensive exchange with Jashari. There were a lot of direct and honest conversations,” says Meyer. Taking off the captain’s armband was inevitable. “His behavior and the interview were not correct towards the team.” But now everything is back on track. “He is here and we are happy. Our goal is to be safe with him until the summer.”

For the time being, Jashari’s file is off the team leader’s table. Yet Meyer has no shortage of work. Four regular players have a contract that expires next summer: Max Meyer (28), Pius Dorn (27), Martin Frydek (31) and Denis Simani (31). “We are in contact with every player.”

The namesake and the thorn must remain

Meyer does not want to go into details about individual players. But that also applies to its namesake. «Max is a key player and has blossomed for us again. He likes it here very much. We have already made one or two attempts to extend the contract with him, but we cannot say more yet.” Money is not the problem. “Max is less concerned with money, otherwise he would never have come to Lucerne. the sporting prospects are much more important.”

Because the club now has different ambitions than a year ago, sports director Meyer is confident that the contract extension will be successful. The same goes for Dorn. “We will do everything we can to expand with them. They are two valuable players that we would like to keep with us.” Meyer wants to prevent them from leaving the club for free in their best football days.

“Criticism bounces off me”

Someone who should no longer be in Lucerne, on the other hand, is Samuele Campo (28). Instead, he diligently posts photos of the Swissporarena gym on Instagram. “We looked for a solution for him last winter and also in the summer and hope that he will do so. Unfortunately, no agreement has been reached.” Now the next goal is to transfer it over the winter.

How disappointed is a sporting director when a transfer like Campo’s doesn’t work out? ‘Personally, I’m not worried about that. Every player has it in their own hands. No one has a free pass. It is always the performance principle that counts.” Meyer deals with criticism of himself just as consistently. “It bounces off me. I have confidence in what we do and how we work internally. That also means that we constantly question ourselves.” Even tutoring from Degen doesn’t change that.
