13th place after six matchdays – you can’t exactly say that Montpellier had a furious start to the championship. But little by little, Michel Der Zakarian’s (60) team is getting going and their playing performance is improving.

An example of the rising trend is the Swiss defense gem Becir Omeragic (21). In the summer he moved from Zurich to the south of France – and after the usual adjustment period he has now settled into Montpellier’s defense. The Geneva resident has always been in the starting line-up in the last three league matches. The elegant centre-back’s playing time is increasing – and his performances are going from strength to strength.

“I think he is playing very well,” his coach said last weekend before the match against Rennes (0-0). “He is aggressive and strong in duels. He is fearless when it comes to building up the game and plays good passes.” It is precisely these qualities that allowed Omeragic to make his debut in the FCZ first team at the age of 17.

His successful start to his new adventure in Montpellier must be some kind of revenge for the previous, rather complicated season. As a reminder, the Swiss U21 international injured his meniscus during the derby against the classification in April 2022. After long months of recovery, he was demoted upon his return to the bench by then coach Franco Foda (57). Omeragic shuttled between the reserves and the playing field for a few weeks before another injury sidelined him.

But 2023 is the year of redemption for Omeragic. In January he returned to Zurich’s starting eleven, this time under Bo Henriksen (48). And he kept this regular place until the end of the season. In addition to the logical step abroad, another highlight awaited the young man from Geneva this summer: he took part in the European Championships with the Swiss U21 national team and reached the quarter-finals.

When Omeragic signed for Montpellier, he was not afraid to make his ambitions known, but he remained modest. “The most important thing is to keep both feet on the ground and keep working hard,” he told Midi Libre. And further: “At the age of 21 you haven’t achieved anything yet, you have to constantly surpass yourself and set higher and higher limits for yourself.”

The four-time Swiss senior national player (last called up by Petkovic in the summer of 2021) has quickly won the hearts of Montpellier fans and found his rhythm in Ligue 1 without any problems. Another proof of his potential. It is possible that Omeragic, as a regular player in France, will also be targeted by Murat Yakin. Will he receive a call for the next Nati meeting?
