“There’s the bad Schultz”: coach’s announcement for the FCB players

In Yverdon, Timo Schultz had to accept the next disappointment with FCB.

The day before the home game against Lucerne, Timo Schultz faces the media. And the first question for the FCB coach is a big one: is your job in danger?

Schultz’s answer was just as simple: “I can read the table too. Four points are far too few. I am responsible for that. Now the pressure is on. Results are needed, ideally six points from the next two home games. There is no way to continue this way.”

You have to give him credit for one thing: despite the enormous unrest at FCB, Schultz remains calm. Authentic. The obligatory casual saying when meeting the North German now also comes, because his job is slowly but surely at stake. What would he do differently to prevent the painful 2-3 defeat in Yverdon? Answer: “If I wanted to judge in retrospect, I would have studied pathology.”

The evil Schultz is unpleasant

Schultz then provides an explanation for the defeat against the promoted team. At least the attempt. He says: “We trained for three good weeks beforehand, the intensity and quality were there. But when a free kick fell in front of our penalty area immediately after kick-off, I felt: the plug had been pulled! Even if I give the players credit for their will, it wasn’t enough from start to finish. What bothers me most is that we didn’t even have the courage to make mistakes.”

So have the players had to deal with the evil Timo Schultz in recent days? “That’s true – and it’s unpleasant,” says the coach, “but chasing the boys up the stairs with medicine balls would be counterproductive. There were clear announcements, a clear direction from the coaching team: we cannot continue like this!”

This applies to the players. But also for Schultz himself: under him, FC Basel is in a worse position after six match days than it has been in 29 years. The 30 million that were reinvested in the team after the more than 50 million francs in transfer income, yielded only four points in the competition in addition to two victories in the cup against amateurs. Only thanks to the better goal difference compared to that of promoted Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy, FCB is not last.

Memories of the start at St. Pauli

Another defeat against Lucerne would worsen the situation. Continue to increase the pressure on Schultz. President David Degen recently declared a state of alarm in the BaZ interview: “It is five to twelve.” And that was before the bankruptcy in Yverdon…

How does Schultz want to manage the crisis? Remembering the past should also help: When Schultz became coach at St. Pauli in 2020, things also went poorly at first, with 13 games without a win in a row. “At that time it was similar to the situation now in Basel, with a major upheaval in the summer. We faced the crisis together, remained calm and gave each other the time we needed. Of course you always want that as a coach.” The question is whether Schultz’s wishes are also reflected in Degen and Co. will be fulfilled if results continue to be lacking.
