GC is not getting going this season. The hoped-for liberation in the derby against FCZ did not materialize on Tuesday. The arch-rivals punished the Hoppers’ shaky defense, with the WG failing to take advantage of even the best opportunities up front.

The impression in Letzigrund remains that GC could have beaten, if not even beaten, this FCZ with more passion, more determination and probably more quality.

Bruno Berner (45) swallows his frustration about the defeat in his first derby as classification coach and says at the media conference after the match: “This performance makes you want more. This game gives us the courage to continue working hard in the coming days. The team building process is progressing.”

“The team gave everything”

Berner does not accept that the FCZ aimed for the derby victory with more intensity. ‘Of course we wanted to win. That is what all twelve clubs in this competition always want. If you don’t want to win the derby, where? The team gave everything and largely executed our plan.”

Berner does not say a word about the fatal mistakes before the goals were awarded – in the first, Dirk Abel’s opponent Rodrigo Conceicao remained on the wing, and in the second, communication was not good, so Ayumu Seko headed the ball directly to the opponent.

The classification coach makes light of the defeat in the derby. That is understandable: the rankings were able to take the red lantern at the end of the 8th round on Thursday. It makes sense that Berner doesn’t want to publicly criticize his troubled team.

Second match in three days at Letzi-Acker

He prefers to be enthusiastic about the fact that “the transition from training to the stadium is increasingly successful”. This means that the apparently good training impressions are now increasingly reflected in the game. “We deserved at least one point. We had more shots and more chances. There is simply a lack of smarts and experience,” said Berner.

And of course the Letzigrundveld also comes into the picture. Berner: “We had to play twice on this deep field in three days, it took energy.” And what does Berner’s counterpart Bo Henriksen say about this subject? “That was an advantage for GC, they were already used to the space conditions…”
