Schalke 04 is pulling the trigger! The Royal Blues fire head coach Thomas Reis (49). This decision comes as no surprise. Because after the relegation the team remains far behind expectations, even one league lower. The start of the season is frightening for Schalke – after seven matchdays, the Handsomes are in 16th place in the relegation zone.
“Following the recent overall disappointing performances and lack of prospects for success, the sports management has decided to dismiss head coach Thomas Reis and assistant coach Markus Gellhaus with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement. “We lacked the necessary conviction that we could stop the negative development in the current situation,” said sports director André Hechelmann.
Assistant coach Matthias Kreutzer (40) will take over for the time being. At the same time, a long-term follow-up solution is being sought. Reis took over the team last October at the bottom of the Bundesliga, but despite a nice comeback, could not avoid relegation. (sbe)
