Now it’s finally over. Stefan Burkhalter (49) resigned after the autumn wrestling day last weekend in Siebnen SZ. After no fewer than 113 wreaths and 33 seasons, the right time has now come, the farmer from Thurgau explains.

Just a month ago, he was flirting with Blick about year-end wrestling festivals. “There are wrestling festivals that last until December. Just celebrating the big festivals is not an art. I have always loved small parties and that will also be the case in my last season.” There is a reason why Burkhalter said goodbye to top sport earlier than expected. «Siebnen is one of the most beautiful autumn festivals ever. I was always appreciated here and treated well.”

Tears for father and son

“Many had imagined my farewell a bit more pompous after so many years. But it was small and nice, with lots of friends, just to my taste,” says the Thurgau resident. The trousers, which he was traditionally allowed to nail to a wooden plank after his very last course, are given a place in the living room.

His son Thomas (20) helped organize the farewell ceremony. When Burkhalter Senior retired from wrestling on Sunday, it was also an emotional moment for the junior. “We hugged each other and both cried, it was that special.”

It is not possible to put your feet up

Burkhalter has some plans for the time after his wrestling career. He would like to travel, for example to Costa Rica. As long as the farmer with his own business finds the time for it.

In any case, he wants to take it a bit easier on a sporting level. “I continue to go to the fitness center three times a week. That’s how vain I am.” However, he will refrain from swing training from now on. He doesn’t have to go through that anymore. He thinks: “If you’re going to stop, then that’s the right thing to do.”
