It has been a year since Roger Federer (42) retired from tennis. Now he is back at the tournament where he hit his last balls as a professional: the Laver Cup.
In Vancouver (Canada), the Swiss was interviewed by Jim Courier (53) at the end of the first day of the tournament. “Do you miss tennis?” he wants to know. The fans are making noise, showing that they miss Federer. “Of course I miss it,” he admits. “I miss the exciting moments on the pitch, fending off break points, scoring match points and lifting trophies, running past the fans and taking selfies.”
For this reason, he is happy that he has not disappeared from the tour completely. He always wanted to do that because it had been an amazing 25 years.
Shortly afterwards the answer no longer comes so easily. The reason? Fan questions are also being asked, and Federer is really flustered by it. It reads: What is your advice, as a father of two teenagers, to have a good time?
“I’m just happy that I can still live in my house,” he says after a slight hesitation, causing laughter. These are difficult times, but they will pass. “They are amazing, I love them, but my God!” he adds. “I can’t believe they are who they are at 14.”
He especially likes the strong characters that Myla and Charlene have. And he’s happy that they’re coming home to scream and cry. “They know they can share all their emotions with me and talk to me about anything.”
A nine-year-old girl wants to know what advice he would give nine-year-old Roger. “Maybe you would have a better career with a two-handed backhand,” Federer says. Courier looks at him in disbelief. And Federer laughs heartily. “No, I’m kidding. I’m happy with my one-handed one.”
It’s not just fans who ask questions, the supervisors don’t miss it either. There is great joy when Rafael Nadal (37) appears on screen. “Who is your favorite doubles partner?” the Spaniard wants to know. Background: He played his last professional doubles match with Federer. “I thought it was my wife – until this man showed up,” he replies. ‘But it’s Rafa. Last year was special.”
It could be special again at the Laver Cup in the future. “Would you like to become captain of Team Europe?” asks current captain Björn Borg (67). Once again Federer says he is open to it. “Why not one day?” The fans would certainly be happy. (beer)
