It happened at the beginning of the spring: Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) was surprisingly shown the door. More than six months later, he is the DFB’s chosen man to lead the German national team to success at the European home championship in 2024. As with his employment in Munich, Nagelsmann inherits the coaching position from predecessor Hansi Flick (58).

Nagelsmann will be officially presented to the press on Friday. He doesn’t miss the opportunity to shoot a poison arrow or two towards Bayern. Since his release, he has invested a lot of time reflecting on his time in Munich. Because: “It is important for me not to repeat the mistakes I made at Bayern.”

“A contract is not always what it says”

Nagelsmann does not elaborate on what errors he means by this. However, he makes no secret of his disappointment about the abrupt end in Munich. When asked about the short contract period with the DFB – only until after the European Championship – he said: “I want to feel confidence through the work we do together and not just through the contract paper.”

He explains exactly what he means by this: “I recently had the experience that a contract is unfortunately not always what it says.” A clear tip to the club management of the record champions. And he’s doing a lot better. He is especially looking forward to seeing the Bayern players with the national team again. After all, that’s what hurts the most when you get fired: no longer being united with ‘your’ players.

Despite the short contract period with the DFB, according to Nagelsmann, there is certainly a possibility that the cooperation will continue after the euro. “When we sit together in the summer after the European Championships and realize that we have been successful, we can also talk about a follow-up.”

Euphoria must be stoked

His main task until the start of the home tournament is to create euphoria in the country. “Summer fairy tale 2.0 is the ideal,” says Nagelsmann. This must be achieved with a football idea that convinces the entire team, fuels team spirit and inspires the fans.

He already hints at what kind of football it will be. “We want to generate healthy aggression towards the opponent’s goal, but that doesn’t just apply to our own ball possession.”

The Nagelsmann era starts next month. The DFB team will tour America and test against the US and Mexico. He is not nervous about the challenge, but he certainly has the necessary respect: “We are approaching this with great enthusiasm, but also with the necessary sense of responsibility.
