The reason for the resurrection of Lausanne’s infamous underachievers has been found: it’s the jerseys. More about that later. First of all: the Vaudois had entertainment value even in the ongoing sports crisis, just think of bandit hockey (Barberio), non-existent medical aid during budget cuts (EVZ-Simion), confused sports strategists (Svoboda) and beautiful brawls.

The Lausanne highlights of recent years could therefore easily be shown in an endless loop – possibly accompanied by the spicy Benny Hill theme music. (older semesters, remember, for Gen Z reps: Google it).

Lausanne does mimicry

This season, however, HC Lausanne is also making its way into the power rankings of the sporting world with top sporting performances: recently they really showed off in the first Léman derby of the season against champion Geneva and won 6-1. Not only Tiki-Taka, goals and temperament are responsible for this feat, but as said: the jerseys.

An age-old trick of nature was used: mimicry. Annoying hoverflies pretend to be bumblebees, caterpillars claim to be snakes. And Lausanne has been posing as the New Jersey Devils since this season. That is it. The red home jerseys, the white away uniforms – a pirate copy of the Devils. The opponents actually already know that they are not facing the Devils, but are misled by their instinct: this is nature’s flight reflex. There is no end in sight to the magic of Lausanne, because there is no cure for imitation. It’s just like in nature: if you have to think about whether it’s all real or not, then you’ve already lost.
