No improvement in sight: that’s why the Letzi lawn is a field again

Even though the 0-0 draw between Lugano and Bodö/Glimt on Thursday evening in the Conference League does not produce champagne football, the quality of the game is still worlds better than the basics.

The lawn in Letzigrund is not a pretty sight: holes, partly brown. In almost every duel, fields of mud and grass fly through the air. Is this the aftermath of the “Energy Air” on September 9? “Of course the open-air concert was not ideal for the field,” says stadium manager Peter Landolt, “but the main reason for the poor condition is the extreme weather this summer.”

First too wet, then too warm

First it rained too often and too heavily, then it was dry and hot for weeks. “As a result, the grass could not take deep roots,” says Landolt. In addition, the lawn is used more intensively than in other stadiums during concerts, the athletics meeting “Weltklasse Zürich” and the matches of the two home teams FCZ and GC.

And there is no rapid improvement in sight. It is unlikely that the upcoming crisis summit on Saturday between the rankings and St. Gallen and the Zurich derby just three days later will make the field more attractive.

A year ago, the Letzi lawn was in even worse condition after the “Büezer Buebe” concert. The lawn was completely replaced at that time. That is not the intention now, says Landolt, “we may have to replace some grass strips, such as the sixteen-meter lawn.”
