De Gea did not agree and the Spaniard has been without a club since then. And Manchester United? Found what he was looking for in André Onana (27). 52.5 million euros were put on the table for the goalkeeper. So far, he has largely failed to prove himself worthy of this award.

A mistake with consequences

The most recent example: his failure in the Champions League match against Bayern (3:4). Sané leaves in the 28th minute. His shot? Hard, but not too placed. Nevertheless, he slips through Onana. Bayern leads 1-0, the goal ultimately makes the difference.

Onana is aware of this and judges herself harshly after the match. “I let the team down,” he says. “We didn’t win the match because of me.” He made a mistake on his first shot on goal and his team went down. “But that’s the life of a goalkeeper,” Onana adds. “It’s a difficult time, we have to stick together and learn from our mistakes.”

He scored one in one of his first appearances as Man Utd goalkeeper. He conceded a goal from 40 meters against Lens. That was a friendly match, where hits had to be settled. Other goals conceded are more serious. Over 14 in the first six competitive matches. “I have a lot to prove because my start at Man Utd wasn’t that good to be honest,” he says.

“Everyone is in the same boat”

In fact, the entire team remains below expectations with four defeats from six games. For the first time since 1978, the Red Devils have conceded three or more goals in three consecutive games.

Coach Erik ten Hag (53) protects his goalkeeper. Rightly so, because Onana obviously doesn’t look as bad when she concedes all the goals as she did in the 0-1 defeat in Munich. “We have to support him on the field,” he says. “The players need to understand that they are in the same boat and need to be on the same page to get results.”
