In 1997, Natascha Badmann (56) decided to pursue a professional career. Just a year later, the Basel resident became the first European woman to win the Ironman Hawaii. Badmann also triumphed in the award-winning triathlon in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005. For her outstanding performances, she was named Swiss Sportswoman of the Year in 1998 and 2002.

Now Ironman recognizes the extraordinary achievements of Natascha Badmann. The Swiss will be inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility.

Unforgettable moments

The comeback in 2005 for their last world title will never be forgotten. At that moment, Badmann caught up with Australian Michelle Jones by ten minutes and eventually triumphed with a two-minute lead.

Icon Badmann remains one of four women in Ironman history to have won more than three world titles. She also has the fastest cycling time among women, which Badmann achieved in 2012 at the age of 45. Badmann retired from professional sports in 2016, 20 years after her first Ironman race.

Since 1993, notable triathletes have been inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame for their achievements. Badmann is the first Swiss woman to be immortalized. (jsl)
