Missed participation in the quarter-finals: Golubic misses five match points

Viktorija Golubic (30, WTA 106) loses in three sets to Rebeka Masarova (24, WTA 64) and misses a place in the quarter-finals at the tournament in Guangzhou. The Swiss misses five match points.

It is an unpleasant defeat for the Zurich resident, who was able to demonstrate her good form almost two weeks ago at the ITF tournament in Tokyo, which has now taken her through qualifying and into the second round in China.

Increase the rate after starting

In the third set, Golubic gets no fewer than three chances to end the match. However, she cannot use any of her match points after being able to improve significantly after losing the starting set (1:6). Instead, Golubic must watch her opponent, who is 42 places better, find her way back into the game. Masarova, the Basel native who has been competing for her mother’s home country of Spain since switching countries in 2018, takes serve from the Swiss at the last possible moment and saves herself in the tiebreak.

Here Golubic has two more options to end the game, one of them with his own serve. However, these remain unused, allowing Masarova to celebrate after almost two and a half hours.
