For Aleksi Peltonen (25) it is a dramatic start to his professional career. The striker played his first two games for HC Davos this weekend, after spending four seasons in the American college league. Then there was a big bang Tuesday morning: the league announced it had temporarily suspended him. “The club may have committed administrative negligence that may violate anti-doping rules,” Swiss ice hockey’s highest authority said.
The Swiss Sport Integrity Foundation confirms that “Aleksi Peltonen is currently under investigation for a possible violation of anti-doping regulations.” What happened to lead to this surprising situation? His agent Juho Sintonen explains: “The player, like other ice hockey players such as Kaapo Kakko or Max Domi, suffers from type 1 diabetes. For this reason, he is forced to regularly use insulin. This is common for Aleksi, who has been living with this disease for some time.”
The attacker’s agent continues: “It is an administrative error regarding a common drug that is part of his daily life.” The Graubünden team supported their player in a statement detailing the omission: “To ensure that athletes with health problems can also actively participate in organized sport, the regulations provide for an exception in such cases. This means that affected athletes may use an otherwise prohibited drug under clearly regulated conditions. In the present case of Peltonen, this application was not submitted on time by the HC Davos due to delays and misunderstandings, including in the exchange with the Finn’s home country.”
The record champion made it clear that he “deeply regrets the late submission of the relevant documents and apologizes to all involved, in particular Aleksi Peltonen.” He cannot play for the time being – and in addition to the false start to the season (no points from two games), the HCD has also caused quite a stir.
