You cannot say that Josh Holden (45) started his new job at HC Davos with a tailwind. For many HCD fans, he was a red flag or even a hate figure because as a player he was extremely emotional, sometimes losing his nerve and having many a hairy fight with the HCD while wearing the EV Zug uniform.
To win the hearts of Davos fans, there is only one recipe for the Canadian, who has also had a Swiss passport for a long time: victories. That is why a good start is even more important for Holden than for a trainer who starts with good will. But after the first two games, the HCD is still without a point after defeats against Fribourg (3:4) and against designated whip boy Ajoie (1:2).
As if that wasn’t painful enough, Holden’s predecessor Christian Wohlwend (46) teased him after Saturday’s victory over his former club. “Mission 32 is the club’s ambition: to become Swiss champions. “We and I have not been able to do that in the last four years,” said the Engadine resident, whose dismissal in February apparently left scars. “Davos is a top team and should become Swiss champions.”
The statements of the new Ajoie coach were certainly not aimed at Holden, but they did underline that the record champions (31 titles) are ambitious and that there are some on the board of directors who do not want to accept that the HCD has been without a title win since 2015 was also recently overshadowed by Ambri at the Spengler Cup.
Holden would not comment on Wohlwend’s sharp remarks. “There are 14 teams in the National League that expect to win games,” he says of the false start. “We lost two games by one goal. We are building new daily routines to get better habits.”
The man who has won two championships in Zug over the past five years as an assistant to Dan Tangnes, who was also winless this season, further explains: “Great things never come easy. We have to keep working and do everything we can to play consistently for sixty minutes.” The opportunity to do so presents itself quickly: HCD has to play in Langnau on Tuesday before the games against the SCRJ Lakers and in Biel next weekend. It’s time Holden wins for the first time as head coach, having lost twice last season as a representative of Tangnes, he is already under pressure.
