Successful end to the season: Ehammer wins the Diamond League final

As a long jumper, Simon Ehammer put an exclamation point at the end of a mixed season. The Appenzeller won the final of the Diamond League in Eugene with 8.22 m. The 23-year-old collected $ 30,000 in prize money for this success.

Eugene brings happiness to Ehammer. A year ago, the all-round athlete won bronze in the long jump (8.16 m) at the World Championships in the mecca of American athletics.

First winner of the Swiss Diamond League

In the fourteen years that the Diamond League has taken place so far, Ehammer was the first Swiss to win a diamond. In addition to the Appenzeller in Oslo, four Swiss women have already achieved day victories.

The Swiss reached 8.12 m on his first attempt in Eugene. When third-seeded Tajay Gayle of Jamaica reached 8.22 m in the fourth round, the Swiss immediately countered with exactly the same distance. Thanks to the better second attempt (8.12), this was enough to win.

Unlike most other disciplines, the men’s long jump in Eugene did not have the absolute best in the world. Miltiadis Tentoglou, the world champion from Greece, was missing, as was World Cup runner-up Wayne Pinnock from Jamaica – the two had reached 8.50m and more in Hungary. Or the Chinese Wang, the world champion in Eugene 2022, was not there.

But Ehammer does not have to hide with his performance. The Swiss record holder (8.45) proved to be one of the best under gusty conditions. He impressed with consistency beyond 8 meters: 8.12, 8.10, 8.06, 8.22 were the marks from the first four attempts. (SDA)
