Bayern Munich cannot get past a draw (2-2) against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday evening. The two scenes that led to the equalizer heated emotions even after the final whistle.
Thomas Müller (34) seems quite pissed off in front of the DAZN microphone. After a foul on Grimaldo was called, the score was tied at 1-1. “He plays it with the open sole. I want to kick the ball,” he says. Müller catches his opponent closely. Yet for him it is a wrong decision.
Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel (50) is also beside himself after the 1-1 draw. He races along the sideline, complains loudly to the fourth official and is promptly warned. After the match he said on Sport 1: “The outcome is bitter. The two goals came from two extremely controversial decisions against us.
The second scene takes place in stoppage time. Davies brings Hofmann down in the penalty area. Referee Daniel Schlager (33) decides on a penalty for Leverkusen after studying the video.
‘Look how it falls. We still practice contact sports. “A very mild punishment, very gentle,” says Müller. He is certain he would not have blown his whistle in England. And adds: “We are playing football, come on! Thats crazy!”
Not only Müller is angry, but also Bayern assistant coach Zsolt Löw (44). He talks wildly to the referee – and sees the red card! First of all, there are insults, which Schlager is said to have spoken about in the players’ tunnel. “Absolutely not true!” says Löw to “Bild”. “I didn’t say a single insulting word.” He did not shout at him and hopes TV footage confirms that. They also like to be analyzed by a lip reader.
“Bild” confronts the referee with this statement, which is returned. “It wasn’t about an insult, but about the confrontational way he charged at me,” he explains. According to the rules this is a red card.
Müller and Tuchel are also rowing back to a certain extent. Even if the late penalty upsets them, they have to admit that Davies acted a little too impetuous in the scene. So in the end the points are shared – and for the first time both teams cannot win in the 4th round. (beer)
