The Swiss Davis Cup team led by captain Severin Lüthi also lost the second group match against Great Britain.

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 40) takes the first point for Switzerland this week against Cameron Norrie. After the 3-0 defeat to France, they would have needed a double win against the British to maintain their chance of a place in the top two of the group and thus qualification for the quarter-finals in Malaga at the end of November.

But Wawrinka and Dominic Stricker have no chance in doubles. The British with the newly crowned Dan Evans, number 27 in singles, and Neal Skupski, third in the world rankings in doubles, won 6:3, 6:3.

Riedi stands up to Murray

Both Wawrinka and Leandro Riedi showed strong individual performances. In the first round, a break against Norrie was enough for Wawrinka to win the set 7:5. In the second, the 38-year-old from Vaud made up for a 2-4 deficit. Here too, the 2014 Davis Cup winner was slightly calmer than his opponent at the crucial moments. The break to 6:4 gave him the victory after more than an hour and a half.

Earlier, Leandro Riedi (ATP 152) lost in his very first Davis Cup match to former world champion Andy Murray (ATP 41) 7:6 (9:7), 4:6, 4:6 in 3:10 hours. Surprisingly, Lüthi chose Riedi instead of his colleague Dominic Stricker, who was the same age – and he was almost right.

Too many breaks

Only at the very beginning did Riedi have to pay the price for his inexperience, but then he made up for a deficit of 2:5 in the first set, managed to fend off four set points and set this first round after almost an hour and a half the first set safely. tiebreaker.

Riedi also made good breaks in the second and third sets, but had to give up his serve again each time. Murray celebrated his 33rd victory after an ace on the first match point in his 36th Davis Cup singles match.
