Because her opponent celebrates too early: Italian wins the first stage of the Tour de Romandie

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

The decisive scene: Sofia Bertizzolo (left) celebrates because the refugee Carina Schrempf had already taken her hands off the steering wheel to celebrate and was then intercepted.

Former track and field athlete Carina Schrempf from Austria seemed to have secured victory after an attack two kilometers from the finish. But the 28-year-old, who only changed sports two years ago, paid for the lesson. If she hadn’t already taken her arms off the handlebars to get into the cheering position, she wouldn’t have been overtaken.

Elise Chabbey was the best Swiss woman in 8th place. Top favorite Demi Vollering from the Netherlands, last year’s winner Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio from South Africa, Olympic mountain biking champion Jolanda Neff and Marlen Reusser also lost no time.

The second edition of the Tour de Romandie for women consists of three stages and will be decided on Saturday. The route runs from Romont over the Col des Mosses to Torgon in Valais. (SDA)
