The wizard is back. Denis Malgin (26) returns to ZSC for the second time. The Nati striker still has unfinished business in Zurich. In 2015 he made his breakthrough as a 17-year-old, but the Lions failed in the play-off final in Davos. His second guest appearance in 2022 also ended with a final defeat – despite a 3-0 lead in the series against Zug.
“I think all of us in Zurich still have unfinished business,” says Malgin. «When you play at ZSC, you always have a bit of pressure. Every year everyone expects you to pick up the bucket and lead the way.” The royal transfer is confident: “If we play hockey, with small passes, it becomes difficult for the opponents.”
Malgin is no longer the junior who debuted under Crawford. He married. His wife Emelie is expecting their first child soon. “What impressed me most is his maturity and his leadership qualities,” said Crawford, who returned to the Lions at the turn of the year after six-and-a-half years. “He has a lot of ideas he wants to contribute.” That’s why he’s part of the captain’s team.
Crawford enthused: “I think he will be one of the best players in the league. He is like an extra foreigner for us.”
Malgin could have continued playing in the NHL. “There were a number of teams that wanted him,” Crawford said. “When you play in the NHL in the back row, you’re never sure if you’re going to be in the lineup or how much ice time you’re going to get. I think a player like Denis should be the focus of a team.”
For his second NHL appearance, Malgin dominated in Switzerland, then played and trained with superstars like Auston Matthews in Toronto and Nathan MacKinnon in Colorado. Has he gotten better? “I hope so,” he says, laughing. Too good for the National League? “No, no one is too good for this competition,” Crawford replies. “My brother Eric is the head scout for the Montreal Canadiens. He watched a lot of games in our league, mainly because of David Reinbacher from Kloten. He told me, “I’m so impressed with your competition and how fast it is.” I think the level has gone up 15 to 20 percent since I was last here.”
