Hardly any transfer rumors for a coaching position and hardly any completion reports have caused as many red heads in the spring as those from Landwassertal: the HCD has hired Josh Holden (45) as the new head coach. There was no sympathy for him from his fans.
Factual criticism such as a lack of experience as a head coach was an exception. The violent reactions online were much more dominated by emotion and prejudice – as Holden’s controversial reputation still lingers in many people’s minds even five years after his retirement as a player.
Would you like to say a few words? “A disaster. The downfall. He was a hate figure.” Only a fraction was willing to give the Canadian, who has had a Swiss passport for years and speaks reasonably good Swiss German, a chance. This resentful attitude forgets something: the 45-year-old has learned from the best and changed his team over the past five years.
His transition from EVZ striker to EVZ assistant coach was seamless. When Dan Tangnes (44), a Norwegian unknown in this country, took over the reins of Zug in 2018, Holden trotted along at his side, eager to learn. They communicated openly with each other. Tangnes knew from the start that Holden was working toward a head coaching job in the long term, but explicitly not Tangnes’s.
The track record of their five seasons together is not only impressive, but also excellent with two championship titles. Holden openly calls Tangnes his mentor, who gave him the necessary skills to become a coach. It was also the Norwegian who encouraged his assistant to apply for the vacant coaching positions in Davos and Salzburg. The HCD chose Holden because he wanted to take advantage of the fact that he knows the local competition and its conditions very well in his debut as head coach.
