The “Gypsy King” has his hands full at the moment. Just not with boxes. Tyson Fury (36) fought his last fight to date in December 2022, when he defended his WBC heavyweight title against Derek Chisora (39).
Instead of organizing the long-awaited unification duel with Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk (36, current champion of the WBA, WBO and IBF associations) to determine the sole heavyweight king, Fury spent the year working on a Netflix documentary and uses a bizarre MMA crossover fight. On October 28 he will face UFC champion Francis Ngannou (37) in Saudi Arabia. The promotional machinery for this battle for the specially made-up title ‘Baddest Man On The Planet’ is currently in full swing.
The World Boxing Council (WBC) is looking reluctantly at Fury’s activities but could now put pressure on the superstar. As revealed this week, work is underway behind the scenes to plan a World Cup eliminator.
In the winter of 2024, the two Fury challengers Anthony Joshua (33) and Deontay Wilder (37) will face each other. The winner of this prestigious match will face defending champion Fury in the showdown for the WBC title at the end of next year. At least that’s the idea.
It is unclear whether Fury agrees to this. But the WBC has the upper hand. If the Brit refuses to agree to such a decisive fight, he could be stripped of his current world title. So will he be forced into a grinding fight against Joshua or Wilder? There are currently many indications of this. (sbe)
