He should inspire the New York Jets again: star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Things couldn’t have gone worse: Star quarterback Aaron Rogers (39) tore his Achilles tendon during his fourth play in his debut for the New York Jets. The season is over for Rodgers, who recently transferred from Green Bay, and the Jets’ NFL title dreams are likely shattered as well. Typical Jets! The New York franchise has stringed together bankruptcies, bad luck and accidents since its only Super Bowl victory in 1968 – to such an extent that it is clear to many fans and observers: there is a curse on the team in green. But there are also other clubs that may be cursed.

This is where it happened: Aaron Rodgers is knocked to the ground and seriously injured.

Bayer Leverkusen

In the 2000s, Bayer Leverkusen established themselves as a top team in the Bundesliga. A mix of talents and stars such as Michael Ballack, Lúcio and Zé Roberto carried the Werkself to the 2002 Champions League final. But the pharmaceutical club’s players did not take home the trophy or the championship trophy. The Werkself lost all championship races and final appearances during that time. The final Bundesliga matchday of the 1999/2000 season is legendary: Leverkusen leads the table for the final matchday, three points ahead of Bayern Munich. And yet the team still loses the championship against newly promoted Unterhaching! The Vizekusen myth was born – and despite a series of promising attempts, Leverkusen never made it. The Bundesliga club is still waiting for the title.

Fribourg-Gotteron

What master tip do Swiss ice hockey fans give? Friborg-Gottéron probably not. In the 1990s alone, Freiburg lost three times in a row, despite a top team with world stars such as Slava Bykov and Andrei Chomutow. Lately, Gottéron has been at it again and again. The closest they came to winning the championship was in 2013, when they reached the final but lost (again) to arch-rivals SCB.

They face great Fribourg times, but not titles: Andrei Chomutow (l.) and Slawa Bykov.

Detroit Lions

Football fans have known it for decades: no matter what happens, the Detroit Lions will ultimately lose. Bobby Layne’s curse would be to blame. Here’s what happened: After the Lions’ third championship title in the 1950s, Layne was transferred to Pittsburgh against his will. Layne, enraged, is said to have predicted that Detroit would not win again for 50 years. In fact, there were no more titles to celebrate. And on the 50th anniversary of the Layne Curse, the Lions went down in history in an inglorious way, becoming the first NFL team to lose all their games in a single season.

Paris Saint-Germain

Ever since Qatar Sport Investment took over at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) under the leadership of Sheik Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Paris has been dreaming of the Champions League. However, so far without success. Even billions of dollars in investments have not changed that. In 2020, Mbappé, Neymar and Co. a hand in the pot – with their very first participation in the final. Otherwise, PSG was eliminated ten times in the semi-finals in twelve attempts.

Alianza Lima

Peruvian football club Alianza Lima has an uncanny effect on its opponents in the Copa Libertadores, comparable to the European Champions League. No club has won the competition since 2000, drawing against Alianza Lima in the group stage. Argentine media wrote about the “Curse of Alianza”.

Benfica Lisbon

Benfica Lisbon won the Champions League in 1962. Since then, the Portuguese have been without a title internationally. For some superstitious followers, Béla Guttmann is to blame. The Uruguayan coach won six titles with Benfica between 1959 and 1962. He then allegedly asked for a pay increase. Without success. Guttmann reacted angrily and said: “Benfica will never win the European Cup in the next 100 years.”

Béla Guttmann celebrates winning the European Cup with Eusebio (l.) and Mario Coluna (r.).
