FC Barcelona won the national title last season.

In the fight for better wages, the players went on strike last weekend at the start of the season. The minimum wage previously stood at 16,000 euros, the league’s new offer was 20,000 euros – and resulted in a strike on matchday 1, which is now ended.

The players’ union AFE announced this on Thursday. A rising minimum wage was agreed, this season it amounts to 21,000 euros. In 2024/25 this should be 22,500 euros, in 2025/26 then 23,500 euros. Depending on commercial developments, the amounts may increase.

«I am satisfied after a long, difficult and arduous process. The fact that we have been able to reach an agreement is very positive for us, for the players and for the entire product of women’s football,” Liga F president Beatriz Alvarez told Spanish radio station Cadena SER.

Not the first strike for a collective agreement

The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) stressed that this agreement is just a start. In the future, issues such as maternity leave, anti-harassment measures and expense reimbursements will be addressed. Further meetings have been announced as the competition resumes.

It was not the first strike in Spanish women’s football. More than three and a half years ago, the players held a strike to get unions and clubs to sign a collective labor agreement for the first time, which provides for, among other things, a minimum salary and maternity leave. The national team also wants to play again after the resignation of Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation. The world champion will face Switzerland in the Nations League on September 26.

Ana Maria Crnogorcevic, who moved from FC Barcelona to Atlético Madrid this summer, is also a Swiss international and plays in the Spanish top flight. (SDA/AFP/dti)
