Dominik Stricker loses his opening match at the Davis Cup.

The Swiss Davis Cup team got off to a cold start at the start of the group stage against France. Dominik Stricker (21, ATP 90) and Stan Wawrinka (38, ATP 40) lose their singles matches. This means that the match will be decided early.

Stricker starts strong against Adrian Mannarino (35, ATP 34). He takes the Frenchman’s serve in the second service game and takes the first set. But then the game turns.

Obvious thing in doubles

Mannarino plays stronger and makes virtually no mistakes anymore. He breaks the Swiss twice and equalizes the match again. In the deciding set the 35-year-old breaks again, to which Stricker cannot find an answer. Ultimately, the Swiss had to admit defeat in three sets of 6:3, 1:6 and 4:6.

This means that Stan Wawrinka is already being challenged in the second singles. The match against Ugo Humbert is very evenly matched in the beginning. But at the end of the first round, the Vaudois got a break and had to hand the first set to his opponent.

In the second round Wawrinka can no longer keep up with Humbert’s pace. Early on he is behind with a double break. Even if he manages to get a service game back, the victory ultimately goes to the Frenchman 6:4 and 6:4.

The match will therefore be decided early. The last double between the Swiss duo Marc-Andrea Hüsler/Stan Wawrinka and the French duo Nicolas Mahut/Edouard Roger-Vasselin also clearly goes to the neighboring country with 2:6 and 2:6. The Swiss team continues against Great Britain on Friday. A day later we meet Australia. (mab)
