Danny Buijs was dismissed as coach of KV Mechelen after twelve rounds. The 40-year-old coach is blamed by the club’s management for the poor performance in the competition.
Mechelen is currently thirteenth, just three points behind Zulte Waregem. Last Sunday, Buijs and Mechelen lost 3-0 at KAA Gent.
“We firmly believed in a long-term cooperation because Danny is a football animal with a lot of football knowledge and strong communication. However, the results were not long in coming and that is why we are making this decision,” explains Managing Director Frank Lagast from Mechelen.
Buijs left FC Groningen in June after three years for an adventure with Mechelen, who finished seventh in regular competition last season. Assistant coach Steven Defour takes over from Buijs in Mechelen.
Buijs is the second Dutch coach to be sacked in a short period of time, after Peter Bosz at Olympique Lyonnais.
