No more running after a ball on the Winterthur Schützenwiese: Jozef Pukaj.

Unexpected news from FC Winterthur. Jozef Pukaj draws a line under his career. At just 23 years old, he hung up his goalkeeping gloves.

“After careful consideration, Jozef Pukaj has decided to quit professional football with immediate effect and to reorient himself professionally,” FC Winterthur writes on its homepage. The contract, which would run until the summer of 2024, will be terminated by mutual agreement.

In 2021, Pukaj moved from FC Basel to Winterthur and played in ten league matches. On July 16, 2022, he was between the posts in Winterthur’s first Super League match in 37 years. And played an important role in winning points against his youth club Basel (1:1).

Bad luck with injuries this year

This year, things didn’t go as planned for Pukaj. In January he broke his nose several times, shortly afterwards dislocated his shoulder and had to undergo surgery. Most recently he was number 2 goalkeeper behind Markus Kuster (29) and played his tenth league match in the cup in a 2-0 win against FC Wettswil-Bonstetten. A week ago he put on the Winterthur jersey for the last time in the friendly match against SCR Altach (4:3).

The club acknowledged Pukaj’s decision with both regret and understanding. He wishes Pukaj all the best for the future. As stated in the statement, FCW’s sports performance team is “already working intensively on a good successor for the goalkeeper position that will become available at short notice.” (beer)
