At the beginning of the year, the Swiss Davis Cup team achieved a real coup by winning against Germany. Now the team around captain Severin Lüthi (47) can dream of the next big step. There is a place for the final tournament in Malaga at the end of November. But to reach the top eight, you first have to make an effort.

The group stage starts in Manchester on Tuesday – and Switzerland is the outsider in its block with opponents France, Great Britain and Australia.

Is there still enough for the necessary places, one or two? The form of Stan Wawrinka (38) or the US Open surprise round with 16 players Dominic Stricker (21), who reached the top 100 for the first time, can give Captain Lüthi confidence. The duo also won the doubles together in Gstaad. Naturally, they have also recommended themselves for the double bill in the Davis Cup.
