Many ideas, but nothing concrete yet: Germany’s difficult search for Flick’s successor

For the time being, Rudi Völler is on the bench for Germany.

“Without alternative.” This is the harsh assessment of Blick expert Markus Babbel (51) about the release of DFB coach Hansi Flick (58). The 1996 European champions explained that they had maneuvered themselves into a hopeless situation: “We had to react to bring back new momentum before the home European Championships.”

In fact, the mood in Germany is at an all-time low. The balance is terrible this year: six games – four defeats and one draw and one win. 14 goals conceded. Only scored 8 goals, two of which came from penalties. A statistic that is more reminiscent of a ‘football dwarf’ – and not a four-time world champion.

“I would like to have a Xhaka”

For Babbel, however, it is not only the dismissed coach Flick who is responsible for the persistently low form. “There are too many Indians in the team and no chefs. To be successful you need guys in the team, Germany always had them in the past. But unfortunately they are completely missing at the moment. We would love to have a Xhaka in the team.”

Before the DFB can start looking for a German Xhaka, those responsible must first find an adequate replacement for Flick. Until this is found, DFB director Rudi Völler will be on the bench. Tuesday evening for the first time against France. The 63-year-old of all people was in the middle of the last low point of German football in the early 1990s.

Völler again as crisis moderator

Exactly twenty years ago, on September 6, 2003, Völler entered the history books with his wheat beer angry speech for ARD presenter Waldemar Hartmann (75) after a 0-0 draw against Israel. “A low point, another low point, an even lower low point, honestly, I can’t hear the shit anymore!” As a result, he accused Hartmann of drinking three wheat beers and being able to sit comfortably in his seat and ask questions.

Two decades later, Germany is once again at a low point. Völler must again moderate the crisis. At the same time, he must go through the candidates to succeed Flick. There are many interesting names: Julian Nagelsmann (36), Jürgen Klopp (56), Oliver Glasner (49) and Roger Schmidt (56) are just a few. But these are hardly available to the DFB. According to German media, it is therefore conceivable that Völler himself or ex-captain Matthias Sammer (56) will be on the sidelines until the European Championship and will then be replaced by a top candidate.

How it ends is completely open. Meanwhile, former Bayern defender Babbel has a clear idea of who should take over. “In my opinion, Sammer would now be the right coach to succeed Flick.”
