Scandal in show jumping: Olympic champion faked a brain tumor for years

Eric Lamaze and his horse Hickstead were a dream team.

Canadian Eric Lamaze (55) has achieved many successes as a show jumping horse. At the 2008 Olympics he won silver with the team and gold in the individual event, and eight years later he completed his run of Olympic medals with individual bronze.

In 2019, Lamaze revealed that he had a brain tumor and therefore repeatedly took time off from sports before even ending his career in 2022 due to his health. But now it turns out: it’s all fake! He never had cancer.

False documents

As the Canadian magazine ‘Horse Sport’ reports, an Ontario court has found inconsistencies in the medical documents submitted. The name of the supposedly treating doctor was misspelled, the signature was forged and the report was written in a language that the doctor did not speak. This has all been proven by research.

But what is the reason for such a bold lie? Lamaze has been involved in a legal dispute for about 13 years. He is accused of selling horses several times at excessive prices. Due to his supposedly poor health, he caused the negotiations to be further postponed. Also this summer. He filed a false report and said he now also had throat cancer.

Blocks have been lifted several times

It’s not the first time Lamaze has made headlines. He tested positive for cocaine several times and was therefore kicked out of the 1996 Olympic team. The stimulant efderine was also once found in him. As a result, he was twice given a lifetime ban, each time lifted.

Now it’s unlikely he’ll get off so lightly. His old lawyer has now ended his cooperation. Lamaze must pay approximately R29,000 to cover the other party’s costs for the postponement request. Probably not his last penance. (beer)
