Germans report: DFB coach Flick has to leave, preferred candidate has been determined

Nine months before the start of the European Championship in their own country, Germany apparently is without a national coach. Because as ‘Bild’ wrote on Sunday afternoon, the DFB will say goodbye to Hansi Flick (58).

This comes as no surprise. Flick’s team caused alarm rather than anticipation in the country with their latest Test match results. 3-3 against Ukraine, 0-1 against Poland, 0-2 against Colombia in June. And now there was a 1:4 against Japan.

Flick took over the German national team from Joachim Löw (63) in August 2021. With Löw as head coach and Flick as assistant coach, the Germans became world champions in Brazil in 2014.

Weak overall Flick balance

Our northern neighbor is currently miles away from these successful days. At the World Championships in 2018 (under Löw) and 2022 (Flick), the preliminary round was the final stage.

Flick didn’t even win half of the 25 games as DFB coach (twelve wins, seven draws, six defeats). He started this adventure brilliantly with eight successes in a row.

First, DFB sports director Rudi Völler (63) will take over the national team, reports ‘Bild’. In the long term, however, another solution is being sought: Julian Nagelsmann (36) will soon be introduced as the new national coach, it is said.
