More than a minute ahead: Second stage victory for Evenepoel in the Vuelta

Remco Evenepoel records his second stage victory in the Vuelta a day after his crash on the way to the Col du Tourmalet. The Belgian triumphed solo in the Larra-Belagua ski area, more than a minute ahead of Romain Bardet and more than eight minutes ahead of the contenders for the overall victory.

Evenepoel, winner of last year’s Vuelta and reigning world time trial champion, lost more than 27 minutes to day winner Jonas Vingegaard in the 13th stage on Friday and thus said goodbye to the battle for another overall victory. Accordingly, the dominant Jumbo team with overall leader Sepp Kuss and Primoz Roglic and Vingegaard let him have his way in the following places during his hussar ride over the 156 km from Sauveterre-de-Béarn in France to Larra-Belagua. Evenepoel made the decisive attack for the day’s victory in the duel with Bardet about five kilometers from the finish.

For Evenepoel it was the second stage victory in this year’s Tour of Spain after the sprint victory on the third day. Thanks to the generous points he collected, the 23-year-old Belgian created a nice bond for himself in the mountains classification. There were no shifts at the top of the general classification. The top 10 reached the finish as a whole, with American Kuss still 1:37 and 1:44 minutes ahead of his teammates Roglic and Vingegaard respectively.
