Despite Unspunnen’s disappointment: Kilian Wenger is far from thinking about resigning

What next for Kilian Wenger (33)? That question has been in the air since his disappointing performance at Unspunnen at the end of August. At the time, the 108-time crown winner finally had to settle for a sobering 15th place.

A lack of success and health issues – including years of back pain – have cast doubt over Wenger’s future in wrestling in recent days. Many expected his resignation.

But now Wenger answers and leaves no doubt that he still wants to climb into the sawdust. In a personal statement on Instagram, he comments on the speculation. “I will not let anyone who has not worn my shoes and walked my path determine my future,” said Wenger.

It is unavoidable that the experienced athletes will at some point have to make way for the up-and-coming youngsters and that the body will wear out over time. But Wenger makes it clear: “The sawdust, the training, the camaraderie: my joy in wrestling is still great!”

This should put speculation about Wenger’s future to rest for the time being. The father of two now has time to recover and spend time with his loved ones. Then he returns to the sawdust – and must follow his words with deeds. (are)
