In club football it is the most normal thing in the world: a professional meets the old with his new team. Just ask the new FCB defender Kevin Rüegg (25), who will play against three former teams this season with YB, FCZ and Lugano.
At the national team level, jumps from one team to another are extremely rare. And only possible if you have only played friendlies before the country change. Uran Bislimi (23) is one of those rare breeds. He was called up from Kosovo in November 2022, made two appearances and even scored a goal against the Faroe Islands.
But then the former FCB junior and current Lugano professional got a call from Murat Yakin. Bislimi trained in Schaffhausen before becoming national coach. And then, as now, he had a great appreciation for the central midfielder.
Despite not being a regular for Lugano last season, Bislimi was called up to the Swiss national team in June. And made his debut in the 2-2 draw against Romania.
His next assignment could now follow precisely Kosovo. There where many fans resent the change. Their suspicion: Bislimi preferred Switzerland to Kosovo because the chances of sporting success are many times greater with the Nati.
The trip to Prishtina will be even more special for Bislimi than for Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka, the two other Nati stars with roots in Kosovo, who did not respond to the advances of the national team that was only founded in 2016. Shaqiri about Bislimi’s special starting position: “Uran is happy in the Swiss national team and has our full support. But if whistles come against him on Saturday, he has to take it and deal with it. This step was his decision.”
In principle, however, Shaqiri is convinced that the Nati in Kosovo will be received amicably.
