It’s been around in the NHL for a long time, both at the World Cup and Champions Hockey League games. They have been established as a standard in most international competitions. The stream breaks. The time window in which the game pauses after interruptions to allow the TV stations to play commercials. In Switzerland we have so far been spared this. That’s over now.
From the knockout phase of next season, in the spring of 2024, there will also be power cuts. First in the play-in (previously pre-playoffs) for the last playoff places, then also in all playoff games. “We were the only league in Europe that they didn’t have until now,” said Denis Vaucher, CEO of the National League.
However, they are introduced very moderately. For example, while there are three power outages per third in the NHL and two in Germany’s DEL, we only have one. Around the 10th, 30th and 50th minute. There are none for extensions. Also, power breaks don’t last 90 seconds, like in some other leagues, but only 45 seconds. And in Switzerland there are none in the regular season either.
All this will be introduced on a trial basis during one season. If it proves successful, it will remain so for the next three years. This is enshrined in the TV contract, which runs until 2027. ‘It is a Swiss compromise that everyone can live with. The fan will hardly feel this extra interruption of 45 seconds per third,” says Vaucher.
The power cuts not only generate advertising revenue for TV stations worldwide, which ultimately allows them to finance the costs of the broadcasting rights. They also affect the game. Because every power outage gives the coach an extra time out and the players extra recovery time.
“The power cuts will change the game,” said ZSC coach Marc Crawford. Besides tactical adjustments that can be made and communicated, he thinks the clubs can push their top line even further, as the power cuts give them an extra break.
