No chance at EM: Volleybal-Nati says goodbye with bankruptcy

The Swiss national volleyball team – Reto Giger in the photo – also loses the last group match at the European Championship.

The Swiss volleyball team closed the group stage of the European Championship in Italy with a 0:3 defeat against Belgium. However, they had already missed the round of 16.

Unfortunately, the team of the retiring national coach Mario Motta could not fully build on the performances they showed in this game, which was pointless for both countries. Even though the Swiss stayed on until the end, at least in the third set, a better judgment was mainly prevented by the high error rate. This could not be offset by the strong performance of young Lars Migge.

Of course, the record of the Swiss is sobering at first glance: five group matches, as many defeats and only one point away from winning the only two sets against Estonia. Realistically, not much more could be expected against the top class opponents with three teams from the European top 6 and only Estonia within sports range.

There will likely be a change

The Swiss also initially had a hard time in their second participation in the European Championship final after 1971 and disappointed during the first half of their workload with too many awe-inspiring, despondent performances. This only changed after the 2-0 set deficit in the third group match against Estonia. With their backs to the wall, the Swiss still managed to turn things around – and after the 2:2 tie, they could have even won the tiebreak with a bit of luck. After that, they could even challenge and put a lot of pressure on world and European champions Italy, especially at 23:25 in the second set.

Now a change is likely to take place. Above all, it is important to adequately replace Mario Motta, the Italian master builder of the international power surge of recent years. In addition, one or the other veteran will probably no longer participate in the next qualifying campaign. On the other hand, younger players in Italy have been able to gain important international experience under the guidance of the carefree and only 19-year-old Lars Migge from Amriswil. It will probably be decisive for further development that – as with women – the best move abroad and develop there at the highest possible level. (SDA)
