“Become sports director of FCB”: this is how Stocker sees his future

His contract with FC Basel was to run for another year, but on May 17, 2022, Valentin Stocker (34) announced his resignation.

A decision he made voluntarily, as Stocker said in a media round of the “Basler Zeitung”. He played 416 games for FCB, became champion six times and won the cup four times. The club was his family for years, of course he misses that, which is why he hardly ever went to the stadium at first. “I had to distance myself,” says Stocker.

‘I wish I had her there’

On Sunday he steps onto the Joggeli lawn for the last time as a player. Based on shirt number 14, his farewell match starts at 2.14 pm. “Many will come, with whom I have had the opportunity to experience beautiful moments in red and blue,” he says. “It’s just a shame that players like Yann Sommer, Alex Frei or Arthur Cabral had to cancel. Even after that, FC Basel should not disappear from Stocker’s life. On the contrary. “My goal is to become FCB’s sports director,” he says. But the right time has to come for that. First he has to gain the necessary knowledge and experience – as he did at stages at Hertha and Union Berlin or at FCB with a deeper understanding of the scouting system. Now comes the next step. “I am starting a sports management course at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in October,” reveals Stocker. “But it’s not explicitly about football.”

Always a little critical

However, he continues to follow football closely. Already during his career he criticized one or the other. “Also the many team changes at FCB”, said Stocker. He wondered if it could be done differently. That is easier said than done as there are many aspects involved. Football reflects the latest developments in society, he says. Social networks and reach would be important. Because it always has to be faster, better, higher and further, many things have fallen by the wayside.

This is also the case with Stocker. There were many things he couldn’t really enjoy. Only after his retirement can he see many moments again. For example, when he walked across Barfüsserplatz and looked at the casino balcony. “It makes you realize how many times you’ve stood there and cheered on the fans.” The fans, who will now cheer him on as a player again.
