Sergio Ramos (37) has had a world career. The Spanish central defender can call himself world champion, European champion and four-time Champions League winner. Ramos won a total of 29 titles with Spain, Real Madrid and PSG.
Anyone who has such a resume can take it easy in the late fall of their career. But that is not the case for Ramos. Rather than follow the lure of Saudi Arabia – Benzema club Al-Ittihad fiercely courted him – he decided to return to his hometown club, Sevilla.
A nice story you would think. But not if you ask the Seville fans. Ramos’ return causes pure horror among supporters rather than euphoria.
The ultragroup Biris Norte published a statement that was viewed more than 1.4 million times on X within hours. In it, supporters make their displeasure with the Ramos movement more than clear. “The very suggestion of signing Ramos shows a lack of respect for the club’s values.”
And the ultras do it even better: “We oppose everything that violates the principles and dignity of FC Sevilla.” Instead of being greeted with open arms, Ramos is greeted with outrage and disgrace.
The reason: The relationship between the star defender and his boyhood club has been strained since his transfer to Real Madrid in 2005. At the beginning of this complicated relationship is the manner of his departure. In any case, the fans of Sevilla are at odds with Real. But the fact that he forced the change by allegedly paying part of the fee out of his own pocket is being particularly resented.
In the years that followed, there were repeated heated scenes on the lawn. One episode from 2018 is particularly memorable. At the time, Ramos shot down Sevilla FC in his own stadium with a brace and then cheered provocatively before the turn. The angry response from Sevilla fans was a hailstorm of thrown objects.
After the match, Sevilla reported Ramos’ celebration to the Anti-Violence Commission. Ramos publicly replied that Sevilla fans do not deserve his respect.
Now the footballer wants to make a new start at his home club. He was well aware that his arrival would not cause enthusiasm. During his presentation, Ramos apologized to fans for his missteps: “18 years have passed since I left. I’ve made mistakes and I want to take this opportunity to apologize.” He came to help and looks forward to seeing you again.
In any case, the ultras would hardly claim the latter. But it is known that time heals all wounds. Also in football.
