Serious allegations from Van Gaal: was the World Cup manipulated in favor of Messi?

Louis van Gaal is sure: “Lionel Messi had to become world champion.”

It was one of the most heated matches at the World Cup in Qatar last fall: the Netherlands against the eventual world champion Argentina. First catch-up race for the Orange – with the 2-2 equalizer deep into stoppage time. Then follows the drama of the penalty shoot-out, in which the Dutch lost their nerve. During the game, there was already bickering and bickering on the field, but the catacombs were not spared verbal attacks either.

The frustration in the Dutch camp apparently still runs deep months after the World Cup. There is no other explanation for the recent interview of ex-Orange coach Louis van Gaal (72). “Do I think Messi should have become world champion? I think so. I really mean it,” the Dutchman told NOS.

No approval from Oranje-Star

Van Gaal exclaims: “If you’ve seen how Argentina scored their goals and how we scored our goals. How the Argentines crossed borders and went unpunished…it was framed.” The 72-year-old therefore makes serious accusations of manipulation against FIFA!

However, he receives no support from his former protégés. Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk (32), who missed his penalty in said quarter-finals, says: “He can say what he wants, it’s his opinion, but I don’t agree with him and I don’t share the same opinion.”

After cancer: on the mend

Looking back, some refereeing decisions in the quarter-finals were indeed questionable – albeit on both sides. A fact that Van Gaal seems to ignore even months later.

After the World Cup, Van Gaal resigned because of prostate cancer. Now he is on the mend as he also announced in the interview. (mo)
