Noah Okafor has been in Milan for a few weeks. When asked about the city and its cuisine, he gets excited. «Anyone who knows Milan knows that Milan is a very beautiful and cosmopolitan city. And anyone who loves food knows that Italian cuisine is very tasty.”
But because it sounds a little too much like ‘Dolcefarniente’ (sweet laziness) and Dolce & Gabbana in the fashion metropolis to him, he immediately adds: ‘But in the end I’m here to play football, to train – and not to see the city.”
He has played in all three championship games so far – as a joker in the final minutes. Once he came for Giroud in the attack center, twice for Leão on the wing. Okafor doesn’t care where he plays. “I can basically play anywhere in the front,” he says. It’s important for him to play again. “I’m happy to be back on the field.”
In April he broke his metatarsal bone against Linz and only played for Red Bull Salzburg again when he moved to “Bella Italia”. The time of suffering seems over. “Injuries are also part of football. It’s important to stay positive, to stay strong,” says Okafor. And: «I feel fine, but I’m not quite at my old level yet. I’ll keep pushing, and soon you’ll see old Noah again.’
He knows that even then the competition in the Milan storm will be fierce. Don’t bother him, on the contrary. “I like the competition, that’s one of the reasons why I chose Milan.” He is sure that as a young player he can benefit from the many good teammates. “Evolve and get better,” he says.
He still lives in a hotel in Milan, but will soon move to his own apartment, he says. His family always comes to the games. He already understands Italian quite well, but wants to learn it even better. The start with three wins from three games went well. The man from Basel patiently answers all questions about Milan.
But he does not want to talk about the city derby against Inter on September 16. “My focus is now completely on the national team. We want to get six points from the qualifiers against Kosovo and Andorra.”
Two wins, maybe with the odd Okafor goal? It would be his goal debut in 2023. How much does he miss it? Okafor self-assured: «In the next games I will score goals. I’m convinced of that.”
