10th Vuelta stage in Valladolid: Ganna wins time trial for Evenepoel – Bissegger defeated

Filippo Ganna wins the 10th stage of the Vuelta.

Filippo Ganna used the only stage of this 78th Tour of Spain to make a statement on his own behalf. The 2020 and 2021 World Time Trial Champion took his first victory in a Grand Tour outside the Giro d’Italia on the 25.8km and largely flat course.

Closest to the Italian was last year’s winner Remco Evenepoel, who again made a strong impression in the battle for the leader’s red jersey. In his first race in the world time trial champion’s rainbow jersey, the 23-year-old Belgian lost 16 seconds off the best time, making him the fastest of the overall contenders.

Roglic and Vingegaard lose time

However, Sepp Kuss’ red jersey was never compromised. As thirteenth in the day’s standings, the American defended his lead in the general classification, which he had taken on Saturday. Meanwhile, his teammates and captains Primoz Roglic (in third place) and Jonas Vingegaard (in tenth place) lost ground at Evenepoel.

In the general classification, Kuss is 26 seconds ahead of second-placed Spaniard Mikel Landa, followed by Evenepoel (1:09 minutes behind) and three-time Vuelta winner Roglic (1:36). Tour de France winner Vingegaard remains in 7th place, 2:22 minutes behind.

Bissegger not with the best

The European time trial champion Stefan Bissegger could not compete with the very best in his special discipline. Practically as fast as Vingegaard, the Thurgau lost 1:19 minutes to the victorious Ganna in eleventh place. It is becoming increasingly clear that a complicated season with a broken wrist will end in the spring with no win for Bissegger. In 2021 he won three races, in 2022 two.

In the 11th stage on Wednesday, the next mountain finish is scheduled in the Iberian Mountains. However, the 6.5 km final climb to the mountain lake Laguna Negra is the only major obstacle of the day. The gradient on the last kilometer is often in the double digits. (SDA/be)
