Feyenoord takes the lead away from AZ and sends a signal to Ajax and PSV

View the summary of AZ – Feyenoord

AZ have lost their lead and undefeated status in the Eredivisie. Coach Arne Slot of all people gave the Alkmaarders a bad day, turning a deficit against Feyenoord into a 3-1 win.

Slot was fired by AZ about two years ago when the club got wind that he was negotiating with Feyenoord. After his highly acclaimed work in Alkmaar, with a shared first place in the Eredivisie at the Corona stop, he is now building a team in Rotterdam that has to fight for the title.

Watch interviews with Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, Feyenoord director Dennis te Kloese, AZ keeper Hobie Verhulst and AZ coach Pascal Jansen in the carousel below.

Since both still have a European duel in their legs on Thursday, the highlights of this top game in Alkmaar were few. And that fatigue probably played a part too, as you could tell from the stitches some people had lost. The decisive moment is when AZ keeper Hobie Verhulst grabs a wipe ball from Sebastian Szymanski (1:2).

Second AZ defeat in three days

AZ lost for the second time in three days. A bit silly at first in the Conference League against Apollon Limassol and now, given how the game went, the Alkmaarders would have been more likely.

AZ practically held first place thanks to a goal from Jens Odgaard after the Dane capitalized on the disorder in Feyenoord’s defense with a header. Goalkeeper Justin Bijlow hesitated, with a high cross from Pantelis Hatzidiakos just in front of his goal. And Gernot Trauner and Marcus Pedersen were knocked in the air.

That was another sloppiness from Trauner, who previously played with fire with a foul on a nearly broken player. The occasional captain didn’t get off to a good start but recovered as the game progressed.

Jordy Clasie misses a top chance to make it 2-1 just before the break

Permanent captain Kökcü declined to play with the rainbow ribbon because his beliefs made him not feel like the right man to deliver a message from the LGBT community.

The Turkey midfielder took charge after Santiago Giménez decorated a penalty when the Mexican deftly hung behind Sam Beukema’s leg. He coolly slipped into the opportunity.

On the other hand, Jacob Rasmussen also had a casual defensive moment, missing a chasing Jordy Clasie on the replay. But that second goal could have come sooner for Feyenoord after Szymanski’s turn against the post spiked.

Danilo with a very nice goal

A win was enough for Feyenoord to keep up with Ajax and PSV. With a bit of luck (Szymanski after a mistake by Verhulst) and a portion of pure class (a wonderful long-range shot by Danilo, who had just come on as a substitute), the three points were certain.

Feyenoord are now level with AZ in the rankings, one point behind PSV. With a win over Excelsior, Ajax can take the Eredivisie lead from Eindhoven again on Sunday night.
