FC Twente is still leading in its own Grolsch Veste this season. The fifth home game against FC Groningen was also a win: 3-0.

Groningen lost for the fourth straight game, ending in a row with Vitesse, PSV, Excelsior and Fortuna Sittard also boarding the bus from Enschede with no points. Twente also finished fifth in the Eredivisie with the win.

Twente fans didn’t have a reason to celebrate before half-time, although they saw that the home team was stronger. This created opportunities for Michel Vlap in particular, who only hit the crossbar with a free kick.

Groningen goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh, replacing the injured Michael Verrips, was also instrumental in preventing Twente from scoring, including a tricky Ramiz Zerrouki free-kick.

Shortly after the break, Leeuwenburgh even had to give up twice. First he was passed by Virgil Misidjan with a shot and a few moments later Joshua Brenet made it 2-0.

Suslov injury

This immediately broke the resistance of the Groningen. The visitors, with Tomáš Suslov injured, tried to limit the damage. Leeuwenburgh prevented Misidjan’s second goal with a great save.

Van Wolfswinkel came closest to making it 3-0 but his shot miraculously stayed in the crossbar and post over Leeuwenburgh. After his previous two assists to Misidjan and Brenet, the striker celebrated himself in the closing stages after a vicious left-leg kick.
