Harrie Lavreysen easily qualified for the final in the sprint. At the Track Cycling World Championships in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, he left the Polish powerhouse Mateusz Rudyk far behind in two heats. In the final, Lavreysen will face Matthew Richardson from Australia. Lavreysen can become world champion in the sprint for the fourth time in a row.
In the first round, Lavreysen took a 1-0 lead. It got even easier in the second run. All in all a great warm-up for the final against Richardson, who had to deal with compatriot Matthew Glaetzer in two heats in his semi-final.
The final starts at 14:05 and can be seen live via this live stream on NOS.nl and in the NOS app.
Jeffrey Hoogland did not take part in the sprint tournament. The 29-year-old Dutchman fell on his head after the finish of the keirin on Thursday and was tormented too much, said national coach René Wolff.
The decision came a day after Hoogland took gold in the 1km time trial, a non-Olympic segment. At the beginning of this world championship he also took silver in the team sprint and in the keirin.
In the women’s keirin, Shanne Braspennincx and Steffie van der Peet qualified for the second round. Braspennincx, Keirin Olympic champion at the Tokyo Games, advanced to the next round without too many problems. Van der Peet had more trouble, only getting a place after winning her run in the second lap of the Chance.
Theo Bos, sprint world champion in 2006 and 2007, has been the national coach of the China track cycling team since February. Reporter Han Kock spoke to him at the World Cycling Championships in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines:
