Compensation Rouiller causes ecstasy: Servette retains chances in the Champions League

The battle for a place in the Champions League remains open for Servette.

A brave performance against Genk ensures that Servette has every chance to advance to the qualifying match.

Even before the start of the first leg, the Champions League hurdle in Genk is considered steep for Geneva. For comparison: the market value of the Belgian team is estimated at more than 130 million euros. More than five times that of the Grenats.

But Servette is not at all impressed in the first game on the way to the royal class. Driven by 18,026 spectators at the Stade de Genève, coach René Weiler’s team looked for salvation on the offensive – and then conceded the first goal because the 1.97 m tall striker Toluwalase Arokodare was almost impossible to defend after a corner (21st).

Rouiller delivers combative Genevans

In contrast to the start of the season against GC last Saturday, when Chris Bedia in particular could shine with a brace, Servette took advantage of opportunities on Tuesday evening. Even from the most promising positions, Geneva cannot beat Maarten Vandevoordt, the 21-year-old goalkeeper talent in Genk’s ranks.

Only a free kick saved the Super League team as defender Steve Rouiller fell asleep to equalize in the 78th minute – turning the stadium into a cauldron.

The last time Servette scored Champions League goals was in 1999, when they lost the first leg 2-1 to Austrian champions Sturm Graz. This time the omens are a lot better. The second leg in Genk will take place on August 2. (cat)
