At Wimbledon, Céline Naef (18, WTA 159) made her way through qualifying and the second round without any worries. Before that, she had already defeated the (once) great Venus Williams in ‘s-Hertogenbosch – in her first tournament at WTA level. In the third such event, Naef, who lives in Feusisberg, loses for the first time in the starting round in Lausanne.
After winning the first set, the 18-year-old is not put off by a rain break. Only with a view to a lead of 5:3 on the second lap did the bike falter against world number 42 Elisabetta Cocciaretto (22). At 6:5 and the Italian serves, Naef even gets a match point, which she cannot use.
Because of this, she clearly loses the tiebreak and finally the match 6: 3, 6: 7 (1: 7), 2: 6.
Two other Swiss women fail much more clearly on Tuesday. Susan Bandecchi (WTA 454), provided with a wild card, won only three matches against Sara Sorribes Tormo (WTA 87), the lucky loser Jenny Dürst (24, WTA 442) against Danka Kovinic (WTA 97) even one less. (SDA/jsl)
