At the age of 16 years and 26 days, South Korean Casey Phair is the youngest player ever to play at a World Cup. The US-born striker made her debut for South Korea’s senior team as a substitute in Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Colombia.
Phair was brought on by national coach Colin Bell in the 78th minute of the Sydney match. The daughter of an American father and a Korean mother, born in 2007, surpassed the age record of Nigerian Ifeanyi Chiejine, who played in the 1999 World Cup at the age of 16 years and 34 days.
“She deserves the chance. She trained very well, as well as everyone else. That is also a signal that she is the future,” said Bell, who, looking at the defeat, added: “At least we made history today.” (AFP/Mom)
