The celebration of the first pole position since December 5, 2021 – the 104th overall – was huge for Lewis Hamilton (38) and the Mercedes race team. The disappointment that the good starting position at the Hungaroring in Hungary was only enough for fourth place is correspondingly great.
Hamilton’s chances of winning are buried after just a few meters, two-time world champion Max Verstappen (25) grabs his opponent in turn one immediately after the start. “The start wasn’t the worst I’ve ever had, but obviously it wasn’t as good as Max’s. I had a little spinning wheels and then Max was in, of course pushed me out and that’s why the two McLarens passed,” the Briton explained the scene.
Hamilton’s former stablemate (2013 to 2016) Nico Rosberg (38) finds clearer words. “Lewis had one of the worst corners of his life,” the 2016 German world champion and today’s Sky expert told his broadcaster.
The flop start is also reminiscent of the Hungarian GP eight years ago. Hamilton looks back: “I was really passed there too.” A near-collision with Rosberg caused the Briton to drop to tenth after starting from pole. Hamilton eventually finished the race in 6th.
And what was the problem this year? The car. “I just didn’t have the pace to keep up with the guys after the start. Understeer, oversteer, to be honest, the balance was pretty bad in the first stint,” Hamilton argues. At the back, “the pace and the car have become much more agile”, but as we know it was not enough for a podium finish (1.5 seconds behind Bulle Pérez). It would have been enough for a fast lap on Saturday, “but no one knows why,” Hamilton continued.
Red Bull beats Mercedes – again. Hamilton: “We are far from beating Red Bull in the race and now we are behind McLaren. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”
Whether the Hungarian pole was a stroke of luck or whether Hamilton can still set a good example this season? The Belgian GP is on the weekend of July 28-30 before the Formula 1 squatters start the two-week summer holiday. (tired)
