“My lawyers will deal with the matter,” Alexander Zverev said Monday of the bodily harm charge against him.

Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev first denied the bodily harm allegation against him and publicly defended against it. “I completely reject these allegations. My lawyers will handle the matter,” said the 26-year-old on Monday at the ATP tournament in his hometown of Hamburg.

On 7 July, the Berlin public prosecutor’s office applied for a criminal order based on this allegation. The alleged injured person is Zverev’s ex-partner Brenda Patea. In a statement, the Tiergarten court explicitly referred to the presumption of innocence for Zverev.

Zverev’s reunion with Molcan

The local hero will take part in the sporting events for the first time on Tuesday at the event, which has been endowed with 630,000 euros. In his opening match, Zverev will meet Slovak Alex Molcan for the third time in a few weeks. The number four-seeded professional prevailed at both the French Open in Paris and last week in Bastad, Sweden.

Should the world number 19 continue to prevail, it would come to a German duel against Maximilian Marterer from Nuremberg or Rudolf Molleker from Berlin, both wildcards in the first round. A possible opponent of Zverev in the semifinals could be the best seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud.

“Always a piece of home”

Zverev is back with Rothenbaum for the first time since 2019. Just like when he made his debut in 2014 as a 17-year-old, he had reached the semi-finals: “This tournament will always stay a bit at home. After all, I grew up practically around the corner.”

Even before his first match on Center Court, the tennis pro was available for a meet & greet with his Alexander Zverev Foundation. In cooperation with the Asklepios clinics, 25 children with type 1 diabetes were invited to the Rothenbaum tennis courts in Hamburg. Zverev has been suffering from this incurable disease since childhood. (AFP)
